"Big" Promises to be a Big Hit
Big, the Musical, this year’s Upper School Spring Production, is a high-energy, family-friendly comedy that focuses on a few weeks in the life of Josh Baskin, an awkward teenager who wishes he were older. And cooler. And more confident.
In a role made famous by Hollywood mega-star Tom Hanks nearly 30 years ago, Josh is transformed into an adult overnight, after the mysterious “Zoltar” carnival machine grants his wish. But being an adult involves complicated things like getting a job and apartment and even a girlfriend—while navigating life in the Big Apple. Eventually, Josh realizes that he needs to get back to his old life, and his trusty childhood friend, Billy, helps him find a carnival machine where he can wish his way back to life at home with mom and dad.
As with every Spring Production, nearly one-third of the Upper School students are involved in some way—on stage as well as playing vital off-stage roles. In addition, in keeping with the Performing Arts Department’s emphasis on providing practical, preprofessional opportunities, students are taking on responsibilities such as costume design and preparation. The show also features a student assistant director, senior Juliet Beck.
There will be three performances of Big (tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday) at 8 p.m. in Ridgway Auditorium for Principia families and friends. If you don’t have tickets yet, you can reserve seats here—or purchase tickets at the door. In addition, as part of the School’s outreach to the community, there will be a Friday morning performance for local elementary and middle school students.
