Two Seniors Earn Awards for Art Submissions

January 29, 2021

Upper School seniors Keith Babcock and Elmo Small won recognition from the Midwest Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Keith’s piece Cutthroat Runaway and Elmo’s cardboard sculpture each won a Silver Key award.

Keith’s digital piece The Jungle received a Gold Key award. The Gold Key Award recognizes the best works submitted to regional programs, and those automatically advance to national judging. Renowned creative professionals review Gold Key works, and national awards will be announced in March. National medalists are eligible for scholarships up to $10,000.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards started in 1923 and is now the longest-running national recognition program for creative teens. Submissions are judged by luminaries in the visual and literary arts. The awards give students in grades 7–12 opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. In 2020, students across America entered nearly 320,000 original works in 28 categories of art and writing.
